How new technologies contribute to the promotion of a country's cultural wealth and to the strengthening of a country's tourist traffic
With the use of new technologies, citizens are provided with the possibility of immediate access to information and information, and in addition, new ways of communication are created. Citizens through the internet can easily and quickly get information. Schement & Curtis (1995) talk about the idea of information, the markets for information, the quantification of information, the ownership of information and the right to access it. They talk about the so-called"information culture" of the Internet, given the large volume of information and symbolic production. The internet focuses on differentiated, specialized information, but this information is integrated into a common cognitive pattern.
Information emerges as a key point in the improvement of the tourist product. The internet seems to be a new medium for its immediate and rapid dissemination to those who have access to it. The reason for this is that it connects the producers of the tourist product such as the airlines, travel agencies, hotels and also the ferry companies with the users of the specific services. What one notices is that the volume of information gathered on the internet is enormous, the complex nature of the information and its volume is enhanced by the fact that the tourism industry is one of the most internationalized markets. International travel generates a significant amount of information, where, those who wish and have access to the internet, can get a large part of the information. Here we must add the fact that, because there is an abundance of information and also offers, the competition between companies is strengthened and the cost of the tourist product becomes more competitive, resulting in many offers for tourist packages.
THE on–line tourism has several advantages compared to the traditional tourist system. It is a real-time activity and offers an immediate possibility of updating the information. In addition, online transactions are carried out without the need for a separate physical meeting place and the cost is lower than that of direct transactions. E-tourism is particularly important for a country that wishes to promote its tourist areas around the world since the internet user can be informed from wherever he is about the services that interest him. Also, electronic access to tourist offers offers a cheap-in relation to the services it offers-solution, without special demands on time and effort.
At the same time, the user - visitor can also be informed about cultural issues, about the cost of living of the destination he is interested in and about alternative forms of tourism. Each country through the internet can project its special characteristics and its culture. So, for example, the majority of museums in Greece today have web pages. The technology can combine image, sound, text, motion and graphics, all in one medium. The visitor can visit the museums through the internet, be informed about the opening hours of the museum he wants to visit as well as about the collections of its exhibits. Museum hubs on the internet follow the model of information brochures, maps and the idea of the guided tour, approaching the internet as a way of presenting them.
The electronic tourism promotion of a country seems to be of great importance, given the internationally proven significant penetration of the internet in the search and ultimately in the choice of tourist destinations by potential visitor-users.
