The Holy Monastery of Agios Raphael is located in B.A. of the island and at a distance of 3 km from the settlement of Thermi. The current Monastery was built on the site of an Early Christian basilica.
In her monastic life we distinguish three periods:
(a) from the 10th century to 1235;
(b) from 1433 to 1463 – year of its destruction by the Turks, with Saint Raphael as the last abbot and
(c) from 1962 to the present.
Today, the Monastery continues its course with the Abbess, Nun Tabitha, whom the Holy Mother herself indicated to assume this position. Abbess Tabitha comes from Cyprus and studied with her for a number of years. With the rich gifts that God has given her, she continues to carry out her duties with great love and awareness.
CASE STUDY
Website on WooCommerce
The project of building the new website and at the same time online store of the Holy Monastery of Agios Raphael Mytilini was one of the most demanding and exciting projects we have undertaken, due to its special nature. There had to be a clear separation between the presentation of the Monastery and the products. Here's a full breakdown of the project, from design to technical challenges and solutions implemented.
1. Custom design and graphics
From the beginning, the aim was to create a website that reflects the spirituality and tradition of the Holy Monastery, while at the same time being modern and easy to use for the public. Thus, the design was completely custom and included:
• Graphics: The graphic elements were designed with monastic aesthetics in mind. They feature beautiful curves and patterns inspired by Byzantine art, adding a sense of harmony and respect to tradition. Each graphic element was designed from scratch by our graphic designer to match the identity of the Monastery.
• Fonts: We have chosen fonts that combine monastic aesthetics with classical elegance, ensuring that the text is easy to read and tasteful, without losing the sense of traditional and spiritual character.
• Color palette: The colors used are earthy and soft, such as burgundy, beige, and gold, in order to convey a sense of calm and spirituality. This approach helps create an environment that is welcoming and timeless.
2. WooCommerce and WordPress – Full customization
The website was built on WordPress with WooCommerce, which is a powerful platform for online stores. However, the adaptation of WooCommerce to the special characteristics and requirements of the Holy Monastery required special attention and technical expertise in many places.
• Custom templates: We created custom templates to ensure that each page of the store reflects the overall design. This included tweaking the product pages, carts, and checkout so that everything was visually consistent with the website's identity.
• Easy product management: Monasteries often offer limited quantities of products and specific categories. We set up WooCommerce to allow easy and flexible product management, while also incorporating filters to help users quickly find what they're looking for, whether it's monastic products or other church items.
3. Responsive design and user experience
The website was designed from the ground up to be fully responsive, with excellent performance on all devices.
• Mobile and Tablet Responsiveness: The design adapts to mobile devices, ensuring that users can browse and shop easily from any device. This was critical to deliver a complete shopping experience to the audience who most likely use mobile phones to shop. On mobile devices the design is exclusively in portrait mode as we believe that this is the only way to fully explore the general style.
• Navigation experience: The website is designed with simplicity and ease of use, allowing users to quickly browse product categories and complete their orders without any hurdles. Navigation details and ease of product search are central to the user experience.
4. Technical challenges and solutions
During the implementation, several technical challenges arose, which we were able to successfully address:
• Speed optimization: Given that the website has rich graphics and high-resolution images, loading speed was a major challenge. We used techniques like lazy loading, image optimization and caching to ensure fast loading without compromising on quality.
• Combining WooCommerce with custom design: Combining WooCommerce with custom design required multiple code interventions to ensure that the functionality of the store remains flawless. We customized the WooCommerce templates and widgets to integrate smoothly with the custom design.
• Security and performance: The security of customer data was a priority, so we installed advanced SSL certificates and took care to protect against attacks while keeping the website performance high.
5. SEO and interface with marketing tools
The website has also been optimized for SEO, using appropriate keywords and descriptions for each product, while the necessary marketing tools, such as Google Tag Manager and Meta Pixel, have been integrated to optimize advertising campaigns and track conversions.
6. Special optimization of images and loading scripts for maximum performance
The performance of the website of the Holy Monastery of Agios Raphael Mytilini was one of the main focal points during the implementation of the project. To ensure the best possible user experience, we implemented a number of optimizations both in images and in loading scripts, since the website is hosted on a Litespeed architecture server.
• Image optimization: Product images and high-resolution graphics required special attention so as not to burden the page's loading speed. We used techniques such as:
– Lazy loading: Images are loaded only when the user needs them, i.e. when they appear in his field of view. This technique significantly reduced the initial page load time.
– Image size optimization: Each image was compressed and adjusted to the ideal size without losing quality, using modern compression technologies such as WebP format, which provides high image quality with lower file weight.
• Content Delivery Network (CDN): For the fast delivery of the images, a CDN was used in combination with the Litespeed architecture, ensuring that the images are loaded quickly regardless of the geographical location of the users.
• Loading scripts: Special attention was paid to the loading of scripts, so that the user's navigation experience is not delayed:
• Asynchronous loading: All JavaScript files are loaded asynchronously, so they don't block the initial loading of the page. So the page is fully functional while the scripts continue to load in the background.
• Minification: All CSS and JavaScript files have been optimized through minification, removing unnecessary characters and white spaces, reducing file size and improving performance.
• Caching: Litespeed server caching technology was used to keep scripts and static resources in cache, ensuring fast page loading for repeat users.
Thanks to the above optimizations and the exclusive hosting in Litespeed architecture, the website of the Holy Monastery of Agios Raphael Mytilini not only offers a unique aesthetic experience, but also ensures the highest possible performance. The combined use of image and script optimization techniques, combined with the power of the Litespeed architecture, provides users with a fast and seamless navigation experience, making the website a benchmark in performance.
Attention to detail
The new website of the Holy Monastery of Agios Raphael Mytilini carefully incorporates design elements that reflect the spirituality and tradition of the Monastery. The typefaces were chosen for the harmonious balance between classical elegance and modern readable aesthetics, while special graphic elements such as curves and patterns are inspired by Byzantine art and monastic tradition. Earthy and warm colors enhance the feeling of calmness and spiritual deepening. Every detail of the design was created with respect to the spiritual heritage, offering an authentic and immersive experience for every visitor.
