On the north side of Mount Paggaios, 7 km northeast of the Municipality of Proti of the prefecture of Serres, is the old Monastery of the Ascension of the Savior, from Byzantine times, at an altitude of about 930 meters.

It has a panoramic view to the plain of Serres and is surrounded by rich bushy and wooded vegetation. In the surrounding hills there are old desert hermitages, remnants of spiritual struggles of ascetics, as well as bastions of an ancient ruined castle.
